MOTAT is supported by over 200 dedicated volunteers who are passionate about preserving Auckland's transport and technology heritage. Spread across the organisation, our volunteers have diverse skills ranging across conservation, restoration, customer service, exhibition hosting, research, engineering, and much more.
Collection Operations roles include, tramway, railway, steam and military operation, as well as print shop and bookbinding. Our collection operations teams are particularly busy during the weekend, 'Live Day's (third Sunday of the month), and our special festive events such as Christmas Lights. Due to the operational nature of these roles, priority is given to applicants who demonstrate a long term commitment to volunteering and a high level of enthusiasm during training.
Collection Projects roles include, telecoms, road transport, military, aviation, railway, tramway and industrial heritage workshop roles predominantly focussed on conservation, preservation and restoration of the collection. Working closely with their relative workshop supervisor and the Collections Hub, our collection projects teams ensure that our operational collection is up to working standard and that our displayed and stored collection is nicely preserved and taken care of for future generations. This is a very large portion of our volunteer team and we regularly take expressions of interest, particularly from those who have knowledge of older technologies and practical experience in a workshop.
Hosting roles include, general hosting, village hosting and handcraft demonstrations, and hosting our Aviation Display Hall visitors. The role of the host is to ensure our visitors have an outstanding experience in our exhibition spaces and around our site, they tell stories about our collection, and some even act as a guide for tour groups. No two days are ever the same for our volunteer hosts.
Other volunteer roles include, gardening, exhibitions content assistants, model railway hosting, admin assistants, and we occasionally have volunteering opportunities in our collections team.
