Tram No.257
AdoptSupport the preservation of one of New Zealand’s most advanced trams by adopting Tram No. 257, a member of the ‘Fiducia’ class, built in 1950. These were the most modern trams to operate in the country, with features that offered comfort and convenience, including upholstered seats, bus-style windows, air-operated doors, and folding steps. Named after the Latin word for trust, confidence, and assurance, the Fiducia class represented the peak of tram design.
Though designed to be operated by just one person, union rules meant these trams still required both a motorman and conductor. Tram No. 257 regularly ran on the Newtown to Thorndon route and was part of the last tramline to operate in New Zealand. During its final months of service in 1964, it famously displayed Shell Oil advertising for their new petrol boost product, Methyl Benzene.
Now 74 years old and still operating on MOTAT’s Heritage Western Springs Tramway, Tram No. 257 offers a tangible connection to our transport past. By adopting this modern marvel, you’ll help preserve its legacy and keep it running on our tramway for future generations.
